Matthew Evans

The next in a series, where we look at the work of some of our designers, today’s featured designer is Matthew Evans who trades under the name of Artcards by Matthew Evans on WeAllSendCards.

Briefly describe yourself (type of artist / designer / experience)

I was born in 1968 and live in Brighouse, West Yorkshire. I discovered an early flair for art, initially taking inspiration from local surroundings with a preference for buildings and landscapes. Graduating from Leicester Polytechnic BA (Hons) Graphic Design in 1989, I worked in greeting the greeting card industry for twenty one years but now work in Customer Services. I have developed my painting style in my spare time. My art has provided me with a wonderful hobby and I have been able to exhibit both locally, nationally and on the internet.

What is your inspiration for your cards and what is your range?

My cards feature images from my own paintings and feature mainly sunsets, seascapes and florals. I always use my own photographs of areas I know well or places I have visited. I hope to add to my range in the future.

Which cards are your best sellers?

I am still really to get my sales off the ground but so far have sold a couple of sunset cards and one floral.Generally speaking local scenes sell well but often my most successful scenes are sunsets.

Do you offer any prints / posters via WASC and if so, what are they generally featuring?

Yes. I have just uploaded some designs so this range is in the early stages. At the moment the range features landscape scenes. Print refs. 156-17176, 156-17177, 156-17178, 156-17179.

Where do you typically sell your cards?

Local venues including coffee shops, craft fairs and by word of mouth. My most successful venue so far has been the Lawrence Batley Theatre in Huddersfield. Here most successful cards have been local scenes. I hope to return to these venues after lock down ends.

Do you have any advice / tips for our designers?

Persevere, keep at it and be kind to yourself. Do not try and do too much at once and don’t expect everything to come together overnight. Focus on one thing at a time. Spread the word as much as you can on social media and by showing at local venues. Don’t be scared to try unconventional venues.

What is your relationship to WASC?

Artist/designer. Introduced by a member several years ago.
